The village which grew into the City of Kaunas was mentioned for the first time in chronicles in 1361. A stone castle was built in the 14th century to repel the forces of the Teutonic Order. Later, this castle became an important element of the city’s defences. In 1408, the City of Kaunas was granted the Magdeburg Rights by Vytautas the Great. Ever since then Kaunas has grown rapidly and its significance as a harbour and trading centre with Western Europe increased. The Poles occupied Vilnius in 1920 and, as a result, Kaunas became the temporary capital and the most significant city of Lithuania. During the years of independence, Kaunas expanded, its population increased and the industry flourished. The city became the center of science, culture and education.

An abundant Kaunas interwar architecture accumulated over 20 years, its dense concentration in the city is a unique phenomenon in Europe; in the context of international modernism it reflects both the then Bauhaus style trends and unique style of Lithuanian nationalism which distinguishes a modern, highquality Kaunas interwar architecture from the European mainstream. Kaunas is the only city in the world where so much of the style of the buildings has survived to the present day.
